The girls come over that night. No oneâs touching anyone. Weâre all just lying in the grass looking up at the sky. We all got a little high earlier, but there wasnât much to go around and itâs already wearing off. The sunset is fading to dark. Thomasâs elderly neighbor still hasnât come back. Ever since his family took him away, his half of the duplex has sat silent and mostly in the dark, except for a lamp that comes on automatically in the evenings. Iâm looking in through those dark windows now. The lamp lights up his living room in kind of a gloomy way. All I can see are a bunch of old books and magazines on shelves.
âHow come no one calls it a spliff anymore?â Madison says to Lexie.
âThey still do, as far as I know,â Lexie says.
âWhy donât you call it that?â
âShit, Maddie, I donât know. I guess they call it that in Britain or something.â
âOh.â
None of us is exactly dumb, but Lexieâs the only one youâd go out of your way to call intelligent. Yeah, I know, weâre all smart in different ways and all that bullshit, but Lexie is different. She and I will be talking about something sort of deep, and then sheâll accidentally take it to a level I canât grasp. I say she does it accidentally because sheâs usually pretty careful about not making me feel stupid. Anyway, sheâs not with me for my brains. One bonus is that I donât make a habit of overthinking things. She likes that. She says it balances her out. She also likes that Iâm a hard worker, and that I have a nice body. Not as nice as Thomasâs, but still above average.
Madison is the dumbest, for sure. Iâm not even saying sheâs that dumb, itâs just that she doesnât think too deeply about anything. Itâs simply not a strength of hers. Sheâs also easily the most kind and genuine person lying out on this lawn tonight. Iâm tempted to say those two things go hand-in-hand.
âIâd move to the UK,â Thomas says suddenly. âI could learn rugby.â
âWhen?â says Madison.
âI donât know. After college.â
âWhat would you do there?â
âPlay rugby,â he says.
Madison sighs. Her breathy voice is perfect for sighing. âI donât think I could ever live that far away.â
âNo one said you had to.â
Thereâs a pause. I realize Madison is sitting up. Iâm not sure how long sheâs been that way.
âIt would be nice,â she says, âif you could at least pretend weâll still be together then. Iâm tired of being the only one who thinks so.â Then she stands up and walks away. Sheâs going around the house toward the front yard.
Thomas gets up and goes after her.
âHeâll make it right,â I say. âSheâs always being so romantic about that stuff.â
âSheâs not wrong,â says Lexie.
âI know,â I say. Suddenly Iâm feeling nervous, and I donât know why.
âSheâs the normal one.â
âThatâs true,â I say. I try to laugh. âWeâre the ones who are strange.â
âWhat do you mean?â
I lift my head off the grass and look at her.
